Ethel Delali Cofie
Ethel Delali Cofie ist eine ghanaische Unternehmerin und Beraterin in der Informationstechnologie. Nach ihrem Studium in Ghana, Großbritannien und den USA arbeitete sie als Head of Commercial Solutions für Vodafone Ghana. Sie ist heute CEO von EDEL Technology Consulting in Ghana. Sie hat die Organisation Women in Tech Africa (WITA) gegründet, die einen Focus auf die unternehmerische Entwicklung und die Stärkung von Frauen speziell in der Informationstechnologie in Afrika setzt. WITA möchte insbesondere Frauen in die Lage versetzen, die Wachstumgeschichte Afrikas voranzutreiben.
Roland Fomundam
Roland Fomundam hat in Kamerun durch verschiedene Innovationen die Landwirtschaft sowohl ökologischer als auch ertragreicher gemacht. Neben der Entwicklung und Einführung von Solar-Dörrern und mechanischen Wasserpumpen unterstützt er seit 2014 mit der kostengünstigen Gewächshaus-Technologie seines Unternehmens GreenHouse Ventures Landwirte und befähigt sie zu einem ganzjährigen Anbau. Dies führte bei jungen Leuten zu einem wachsenden Interesse an der Landwirtschaft. Fomundams Innovations-Modelle wurden in anderen afrikanischen Ländern wie u.a. Uganda, Nigeria, Mali nachgebaut. Roland Fomundam hat einen Master of Science in Technologie und Entrepreneurship sowie einen Doppelabschluss in Biologie und Unternehmensführung der Northeastern University, USA. Neben seinem unternehmerischen Engagement lehrt er auch als Dozent an mehreren Universitäten in Kamerun in den Fächern Innovation und Unternehmertum. In seiner Lecture geht es um die „Entzauberung des Mythos, nach dem sich die Landwirtschaft in Afrika zu einem aufstrebenden Industriezweig entwickele.“ Dabei befasst er sich sowohl mit dem fehlenden Interesse der Jugend an der Landwirtschaft als auch mit dem absurden Fakt, dass Bauern in Kamerun an Hunger sterben.

Abstract: Demystifying the myth that plagues Agriculture in Africa towards an emerging Agricultural economy
Did you know that only 2% of American farmers feed the entire USA while over 65% of the African population involved in farming is still not able to feed the continent? In Africa, it is common to hear a farmer dying of hunger – what an oxymoron.
Agriculture in Africa is still largely subsistence. Despite the numerous potentials embedded in its core, Africans, especially the youths, continue to pass over opportunities with disregard. The image of Agriculture in Africa has been so negative making it a deterrence for any substantial investments.
Agriculture continues to be on a decline in Africa because it continues to be the occupation of the elderly. The more energetic and innovation friendly youths need to be at the forefront of agricultural industry, to adapt and adopt the new and innovative ways to make Agriculture sustainable.
Non-arguably, Agriculture has the potential to nurture a broad-based development platform if the right investments are made. The key to realizing gains in Agriculture starts by challenging and changing the narrative. Then establishing models that lead to sustainable outcomes. GreenHouse Ventures Cameroon has been pioneering this movement and preliminary results have ushered more reasons for increased investments and scale.
The fundamental question is how and why can we attract and retain the youths in the domain of Agriculture?
