Soft Offer

Angela Alves

Angela Alves is disabled. From time to time a nerve in her brain will become inflamed and then, for example, her vision, walking or feelings will be impaired. She asks herself why disabled people always receive considerable recognition for fighting against their disease and making a special effort to appear competitive, available and sexy. Angela Alves doesn’t want to fight – least of all against herself. She doesn’t want to (be allowed to) be productive because of or despite her disability. She just wants to work with what she’s got. With the unavailable bodies that resist glorifying self-exploitation by accepting unpredictability and softening when they encounter themslves and others with hardness. This is a Soft Offer.

Angela Alves made headlines in prestigious cultural magazines with her solo performance with this title in 2019. Six years after its premiere, she returns to this work and subjects it to new scrutiny: how do we look at “diverse bodies” in dance in 2024? Who is laughing at whom? And is everyone genuinely allowed to join in everywhere now?
