Urban Special

Urban Special

Over the past two seasons, the Tanzplattform Rhein-Main has extended the successful workshop format “Antanzen” from Darmstadt and Wiesbaden to Frankfurt and expanded its content. Dance enthusiasts can not only try their hand at contemporary dance, but also regularly get to know dances from street and club culture. Styles such as house, waacking, popping, locking, vogue fem and hip hop have found their way into the Hessisches Staatsballett and the Künstler*innenhaus Mousonturm.

Our Focus Artist, the Collectif Fair-E, consists of choreographers and dancers who have their roots in these dance cultures. They create new perspectives on what contemporary dance can be in the future. Therefore, it is important for us to give our guests an understanding and feeling for the different dance practices beyond the mere viewing experience.

On this day, there will be the opportunity to gain a technical and historical insight into the dance styles of house, popping and hip hop in three 60-minute workshops.

House mit Nora (HOUSEaHOLICS)

House is a dance style that emerged in the clubs of Detroit, New York and Chicago in the early 1980s and is closely linked to the music genre of the same name. The dance style is characterized by flowing, continuous movements that are often performed to fast beats. House dance movements are usually very accentuated and are based on a combination of footwork that follows the beat and flowing movements of the upper body. The dance style has incorporated numerous variations and influences from other dance styles over the years, including Afro, Latin and jazz dance. Today, house is danced worldwide and is considered an important component of so-called “urban” styles.

Popping mit Art X

Popping has its roots in the exciting 1960s in California. During the heyday of funk music, the Oakland Boogaloo dance style developed in African-American communities and laid the foundation for today's popping. Even in its early days, this style combined flowing and mechanical movements that were extremely isolated, paving the way for modern popping. At a time when the exchange of information was mainly personal, different variations and derivatives of this dance emerged, including strutting, electric boogaloo, popping and others.

Hip Hop mit Broklyn

Hip hop is a versatile dance style that has been around since the 1970s in the USA. It is characterized by fast, rhythmic movements that are closely linked to the music. The style integrates various elements such as popping, locking, breaking and krumping and is therefore very diverse in its execution. Hip hop is not just dance, but also a cultural movement that often addresses social and political issues.
