Permanent Trespass (Beirut of the Balkans & the American Century)

Bassem Saad & Sanja Grozdanić

Bassem Saad blew audiences away at the last transmediale with his film “Congress of Idling Persons”. The film perfectly describes what it feels like to be a young intellectual in Beirut: a restless emptiness between revolution and explosion. In his first performance piece Saad now offers a broader perspective. In collaboration with the author Sanja Grozdanic he examines various trials at the International Criminal Court and the disparity between historical narratives and personal experiences. In constructing national histories, supremacist aggressors, their victims and the International Criminal Court are called upon to recognise the reality of particular genocides and the legitimacy of particular states. However, as the experience of violence escalates and intensifies, a semantic gap opens between the vocabulary in which violence is described and the actual experience, which is like an endlessly repeated hallucination.
