Politeia

Ayla Pierrot Arendt

Frankfurt-based performance and video artist Ayla Pierrot Arendt invites you to an extraordinary gathering. Gaia, Mother Earth, is dead. In the shadows of chaos, five video goddesses and their musical incarnations sing and negotiate the fate of their world and the handling of power and decision-making authority in a theatrical space. In a revision of Plato's eponymous dialogues, the multimedia opera brings together voices and bodies that empower and give each other voice. Rap meets cyborg voices, herbaceous chants meet electronic melodies, and shimmering arias, performance, live music and video art merge into a sensual amalgam. By cutting themselves off from Gaia as the exclusive nurturer whom humans have exploited, the projected video goddesses must face the consequences of finitude, take a stand and assume responsibility for collective survival. Arendt's “Politeia” projects the Greek myth onto contemporary body ideals and role models in order to break down societal values and detach them from the idea of a norm. An apocalyptic and hopeful adventure that is both an end and a beginning.
