Murmuration

Le Patin Libre

Dance on the ice - virtuosic, fast, breathtaking!

Huge flocks of starlings crossing the sky in wonderful twisting and turning clouds. Ornithologists call these arial dances “murmurations.” For over five years the Montreal collective Le Patin Libre, consisting of fifteen ice dancers, worked on transferring this virtuosic behavior to the ice rink. Always asking why we gather, why we drift apart again and why our collective behavior is so unfathomable.

In “Murmuration” Le Patin Libre transform the traditional ice rink into a stage for contemporary movement. At high speed they combine precision, athletic virtuosity and complex choreography – with no visible effort, like a flock of birds – with the aim of investigating what everyone experiences when watching a flock of birds: the magic of a collective beauty that embodies the vital energy and fervent hope for survival.
