The Staples Jr. Singers recorded their first and only album “When do we get paid” almost 50 years ago. The members of the gospel family band from Aberdeen, Mississippi, were just teenagers when they started out. Their songs dealt with what they saw and experienced: the backlash after desegregation, poverty, civil rights. “Those songs had the meaning of some of the things that we were going through,” said Annie, one of the siblings. They broke tradition and wrote songs that were “stone cold soul”. Gospel suddenly sounded funky and smooth. Three generations and many performances later, they’re coming to Frankfurt with their newly released album as fresh as ever.
