This year, Meg Stuart receives the Biennale de Venezia’s Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. In her newest dance piece, the choreographer journeys into the human psyche, in a way both rich in connotation as well as emotion, featuring a fragile (light) installation by Indonesian artist Jompet Kuswidananto. Driven by live sound and a plot that is more gestural than narrative, four performers seem utterly at the mercy of fictional traumas; bodies only seemingly meet in order to disengage again; West and East, Dark and Light, the unconscious and the conscious in seeming attempts at communicating with one another within a universe of humanity. This piece is a real trip. In one word: mesmerizing!

Was bedeutet für Euch Zusammenarbeit?
Meg Stuart: Es geht um Brüche und Intimität; um die Aufregung das eigene Universum mit einer anderen Person zu teilen.
Jompet Kuswidananto: Zusammenarbeit ist wie ein Trip, den du gemeinsam unternimmst, ohne Landkarte, bei dem jeder kleine Schritt sehr viel bedeutet.
Beeinflussen aktuelle soziale oder politische Vorgänge Eure künstlerische Praxis?
Meg Stuart: Natürlich, diese Dinge berühren mich sehr. Und ich versuche aktiv, die Verzweiflung und die Wut, die ich spüre in meiner Arbeit zu verwandeln.
Jompet Kuswidananto: So sehr, dass ich versuche möglichst viel Abstand zu gewinnen.
Was war der Ausgangspunkt für die Arbeit, die wir heute Abend beim Tanzfestival Rhein-Main sehen werden?
Meg Stuart: Der Ausgangspunkt war meine Bewunderung für und mein Interesse an Jompets Arbeit, in Form einer performativen Recherche zur Stimme und zur Verstimmlichung.
Jompet Kuswidananto: Unsere Erinnerungen, Traumata, Träume, der Weltkrieg, Massaker, Heilung durch Töne und traurige Lieder.
